19th Hole Media’s Top 10 of 2016

At our end of year meeting each year we go over a lot of material, make a lot of plans, and do a lot of business stuff. But, we also make a point to look back over the previous year and celebrate our victories.

We have come a long way since we started. Here is our Top 10 of 2016.

Top 10 of 2016

10. Speaking Gigs
This year Zeb spoke with the California Golf Course Owners’s Association and the National Golf Course Owner’s Association Arizona on digital marketing for golf courses.
9. Visiting New Client Courses in Chicago and San Jose

One of the coolest things we did this year was add new client courses in Chicago (Village Greens of Woodridge) and San Jose (Cinnabar Hills Golf Club) . . . and, as a result, visiting those courses during the year to take social media pictures, videos and discussing how to best implement our plans for 2017.In September, Zeb brought the family for an amazing trip to Chicago and played Cog Hill, Cantigny, Village Links of Glen Ellyn and, of course, Village Greens of Woodridge. Thank you Brandon Evans for a memorable trip.In November, Zeb headed up to San Jose for the California Golf Course Owner’s Association Annual Meeting and to play/shoot social photos and videos at Cinnabar Hills Golf Club. Cinnabar Hills is a beautiful 27-hole golf course and includes the impressive Brandenburg Historical Golf Museum.

8. #GolfChat Authors

Zeb started #GolfChat in 2015 and since then it has taken on a life of its own.The Twitter chat (which takes place every Tuesday at 5PM PST) now has it’s own Author’s Group. Each month a topic is explored by golf bloggers and their articles are shared on the #GolfChat website.

We have to thank #GolfChat legends Jeremy White for orchestrating the authors group and Cassie Norris for hosting #GolfChat. As well as Pete Flanigan, Tiffany Chiasson, Todd Marsh, Tony Dear, Anne Foley-Smith, Dave Hill and Jim Burton for being #GolfChat Authors. And everyone else who has participated in #GolfChat.

Congratulations to the 2016 #GolfChat Award Winners – @Front9Back9, @golfbandwagoner, @ShawnBell, @h2cgolf, @GolfUnfiltered, @1beardedgolfer, @bowdo83, @tiffchaisson and @JDres15.

7. GolfBoard

We first saw the GolfBoard in action early this year at the Golf Industry Show.Since then we’ve played it at Maderas Golf Club, Los Serranos Country Club and Candlewood Country Club.Maderas is one of the most popular GolfBoard destinations in the country and new partner, Corey Ross is solely using social media to promote it. General Manager, Michael Flickinger said their original GolfBoard fleet of four has already paid for itself.

This year we created marketing packages specifically for the GolfBoard. The GolfBoard is a great social opportunity to help attract followers and online conversations about your golf course. Our marketing packages help to leverage social media to drive new golfers to your golf course.

6. Social Media Golf Course Marketing Column and Sponsorship for California Golf Course Owner’s Association

Zeb has starting writing a column for the California Golf Course Owners Association regular newsletter. The column will share the benefits and best practices of online marketing with golf course owners.Check out his first contributions here:

19th Hole Media became a sponsor of the CGCOA this year and will be helping them recruit new members in 2017.

5. Game 7 – A Night to Remember
Game 7 of the World Series was one of the best baseball games I’ve ever seen. The game ended up being even more memorable for Zeb.Zeb watched the Cubbies break their curse with Steve Plummer, Ron Zraick, Michael Lautenbach – the past, current and future California Golf Course Owner’s Association Presidents – and Executive Director Marc Connerly while eating the best steak he’s ever had.
4. REALiTEE Golf

At the beginning of 2017, we were introduced to Dave Shultz and REALiTEE Golf.REALiTEE Golf is a majestic real golf experience that takes place indoors with a fun social atmosphere. It’s a big idea with a big personality launching it.In February we went with REALiTEE Golf to the Golf Industry Show in San Diego. There we saw founder Dave Shultz in action. He’s incredibly passionate and enthusiastic. We’re looking forward to being a part of REALiTEE Golf in 2017.

Learn more about REALiTEE Golf.

3. New Golf Clients

This year has been amazing for 19th Hole Media. We’ve added several new clients including Cinnabar Hills Golf Club, Desert Island Golf Club, Indian Wells Golf Resort, REALiTEE Golf, Riverwalk Golf Club, and Village Greens of Woodridge. We’ve also taken on bigger roles at Arroyo Trabuco Golf Club, and Los Serranos Country Club and continue to work for Anaheim Hills, Dad Miller, Greenskeeper.org, Robinson Ranch, San Dimas Canyon, and Strawberry Farms.

2. Southern California Charity Golf Classic

We hosted the 2nd Annual Southern California Charity Golf Classic at Los Serranos Country Club in Chino Hills, CA on July 29.With help from many in our community, the tournament met it’s goal and raised over $12,000 for Boys Republic, the Chino Rotary Club, the Chino Valley Fire District, the Love Them All Foundation, Priceless Pets and The Let It Be Foundation. The event was a ton of fun and we have already begun planning the 2017 SCCGC.

1. Corey Ross Joins 19th Hole Media

This year we added Corey Ross to the 19th Hole Media Team. Corey is the owner of Southern California Golf and Travel Blog, contributor to Southland Golf Magazine and Director of Digital Marketing and Social Media at Maderas Golf Club.

He obviously has great experience and our shared mission make Corey the perfect addition to 19th Hole Media.

scholarshipsSince starting the Share Your Passion Scholarships in 2012, we’ve awarded scholarships to 17 deserving students. We’ve met so many amazing and passionate people working to grow golf.  A highlight of #GolfChat in 2015 was when professional golfer, Natalie Gulbis surprised #GolfChatters by giving away free tickets to the U.S. Open at Chambers Bay Golf Course.

5. Awards and Accolades

#GolfChat – How to Build a Genuine Community Online by Jeremy White CEO of Connect Golf

Jeremy White, CEO of Connect Golf, Genuine Community

Jeremy White, CEO of Connect Golf

Marketing is, at its simplest, working out what people need and communicating that your product can serve them. Given the barrage of marketing messages, most people are switched off to traditional mediums, so it’s key to build the awareness first and that happens best in places where people are engaged. Mostly online communities. Only then might they switch on and start listening to what you’re saying.

You don’t need a college degree to figure it out. Common sense is all that’s needed and you’ve got that in bucketloads. Plus the courage to actually get out and give it a shot. No doubt there are plenty of history teachers and others who have a good idea to fill a niche, but they never have the guts to quit their jobs and carpe diem the heck out of their idea.

When I started building Connect Golf, I knew it needed to be attached to a community, but also knew communities were, understandably, suspicious of brands. It is also difficult to find communities without agendas. They exist, but it none represent the greater golfing demographic. The bigger social media platforms have some large communities when you look it on pure member numbers. However you can’t filter out the brands and individuals doing not-so-subtle self-promotion stuff or even the randoms posting pics of themselves on their latest golf holiday. Let me rephrase that, you can filter them, but you can’t be bothered. Most members aren’t even active and a post’s visibility is questionable to say the least.

It’s quite a coincidence, but true all the same, that I came to the view that a Twitter chat for golf was needed to solve most of the issues noted above – excepting the occasional and to be honest quite brilliant moderator stunts involving surprise female pro golfers and car brands (I’m a huge marketing cynic, but was happily tweeting with @lexus mentions). I realised that being a wannabe brand, doing it myself would probably lack credibility with participants, but the very next week I came across month 2 of #Golfchat. Problem solved!

Your role, experience, podcast, website, Twitter account etc. is based around the personal brand of Zeb Welborn, so while most people get that part of the exercise is to grow your own brand, they’re fine with that because they can see, hear and read the story behind it. Done for the right reasons and you’re building a no-nonsense community with golf at the core.

At the door to many online golf communities you have to read a heap of rules about what not to do on those platforms or forums, but with #GolfChat there’s none of that, yet people instinctively know how to behave. Yes we all want more business or more subscribers or more readers or more impressions or whatever, but the #GolfChatters generally understand that the way to build a brand via social media is to participate. Just participate and not sell. Pure and simple, we just talk golf and that’s cool from the perspective that we’re not in our usual sales mode. As John from @golfbloggercom would say, we’re just sitting at the #GolfChat bar and talking about the sport.

I’m usually your one paragraph email kinda guy who has a hard time not communicating a sense of rudeness due to brevity, but I look up here and have written a fricking novel about the things you’re doing right. I truly believe that what you’re doing is the best strategy to bring all the golf influencers together on a single platform for discussion.

Sincerely. Well done mate. Two thumbs up.

Jeremy White, CEO Connect Golf

Team 19th Hole Media Wins Bunkers Paradise Charity Golf Tournament

Team 19th Hole Media, comprised of Gary Christman, Kenny Donovan, Mike Quiroz and myself, Zeb Welborn won the first ever Bunkers Paradise Charity Golf Tournament for the Special Olympics of Southern California on Sunday, October 13.

Team 19th Hole Media at the Bunkers Paradise Charity Golf Tournament at San Dimas Canyon Golf Course for the Special Olympics of Southern California

Team 19th Hole Media

Roughly 50 golfers competed in the event held at San Dimas Canyon Golf Course.  The event started at 1pm and ended at dusk with the raffling off of some great golf prizes for the golfers that attended.

Our group was the first to tee off and had someone in our group poised to win all of the closest to the pin and long drive contests, but none of us won.  We did; however, shoot a 14-under par 58 to tie for the low score.

The round was filled with great drives by Mike Quiroz, great approach shots by Kenny Donovan, a great short game from Gary Christman and I helped out a little bit to fill in the gaps.  It also helped that we all made a lot of long putts.

We couldn’t be happier to have entered the contest and had such a great time, with a great group of golfers for a great cause.

I have known the tournament organizer and Editor-in-Chief at Bunkers Paradise, Ken Lee, for some time now.  Ken introduced me to Kate Hughes, who also competed and Gary Lee, who owns Lakers Nation and Bunkers Paradise.

I’d also like to say thanks to San Dimas Canyon Golf Course.  Ken and I became acquainted through Twitter and when I signed on to manage social media at San Dimas Canyon Golf Course, Ken wanted to make the course the home course for Bunkers Paradise to which General Manager Trip Stevens agreed.  Just a few months afterwards, Bunkers Paradise was holding their first ever golf tournament bringing 50 golfers to the course.

Thank you San Dimas Canyon Golf Course and Trip Stevens for working with me and Bunkers Paradise to help get this tournament off the ground and thank you Bunkers Paradise for choosing San Dimas Canyon Golf Course to host your tournament!

A 19th Hole Story by Bob Pouliot

This took place in October of 1992 …

Back in the day when Dave & Jeff Kelley, Larry Velte and I had a regular Saturday starting time on the north, we would team up against each other. This particular day, Dave and I teamed up against Larry & Jeff…

It was a very windy day… Due to the wind, we had an erratic match going, with the lead changing back and forth. We approached the par 3, 12th. Dave and I had the tee, set at 185 yds.. The wind was almost at gale force, in the direction of the green.

Dave selected a club and was getting ready to tee off… I interrupted and asked “Dave, what club are you hitting…?” .. Dave answered “5 iron.”.

I said… “Dave.. don’t you feel that wind? that’s WAY to much club…” Dave asked: “What club are you using..?” I responded “7 iron…” and wouldn’t let up…

Dave backed off and selected another club… and was getting ready to tee of again. I asked… “What club do you have now?” Dave responded.. “6 iron” Dave… (I ragged on him) “THAT’S WAY TO MUCH CLUB…”

Dave, a little irritated by now, backed off and asked again…”WHAT CLUB ARE YOU USING?”, I responded again 7 iron…”

Dave went to get another club… and I figured I might as well tee off…which I did… and badly. Shanked the ball off to the right..

Dave steps up to his ball… makes great contact…. hits the green… takes 2 bounces…goes in the hole..

I asked….”Dave…What club did you hit?” Dave responded “7 iron.” …… But I just used it to show you that you were WRONG!!!! I don’t remember who won the match…

Anecdote: The following week, unbeknownst to Dave, I hid a bottle of champagne in my bag… We approached the 12th … I popped the bottle

We all toasted Dave’s first Hole-in-ONE.. and still his only…

A 19th Hole Story by Larry Welborn

There was nothing sweeter than playing golf with my Dad.

When I was attending Pepperdine College in the late 1960s, golf was a wee bit of a financial extravagance for me. So getting an invite to play with Dad was always welcomed.

He was a golf-playing lawyer then, a 10-handicapper with a smooth, self-taught swing.

He was never long off the tee, but usually pretty deadly with his irons, an original set of Pings.

My favorite memory is playing the South Course at Los Serranos with Dad and my two cousins, who were visiting us from Colorado on vacation in 1968 or ‘69. We engaged in the usual banter on the first tee about setting up our game. Besides a four-man best ball, we also agreed to paying a quarter for all pars and a buck for all birdies.

And then I blurted out, “How about $10 bucks for a hole-in-one?” Agreed.

So off we went, Dad was playing well. Had some pars, missed a few birdies putts, shot about a 42 on the front before he made the turn. It was a good day, playing golf with my Dad, that got even better on 12.

He had honors, and selected a 5 iron. He made a good swing, made solid contact, and held his follow-through as he watched the flight of his ball.

It landed on the front edge, took a little hop to the right, and rolled about 15-feet before it toppled into the hole!

Very, very cool. I saw my Dad make an ace.

The thing about the 19th Hole that day was that I don’t remember ever seeing him happier. He was smiling non-stop, and his smile grew especially wide when he made sure that my cousins and I each paid him the $10 bucks.

Dad passed away in 2009. He was 88. He had given his original Pings to Grady, one of his golf-playing grandsons, who later became a cart boy at Los Serranos.

I miss playing golf with Dad. But now I play golf with my sons.

And that is just as sweet.
